FLIGHT stands for "Framework for Learning and Inspired Growth through Holistic Teaching", and it is Alberta’s official early learning curriculum framework developed by the Government of Alberta in collaboration with MacEwan University. This comprehensive document is designed to guide educators in delivering high-quality, responsive care and early education for children from birth to age five.
Rather than focusing on strict academic outcomes, the FLIGHT framework emphasizes the image of the child as a mighty learner and citizen—a competent, curious, and capable individual who brings their own unique knowledge and experiences to the learning environment.
We view each child as a mighty learner and citizen—strong, resourceful, and full of potential. Our educators listen to children, observe their interests, and co-create learning experiences that are meaningful and engaging.
Learning happens in the context of nurturing, responsive relationships. We foster strong connections between children, families, educators, and the community to create a sense of belonging and trust.
We carefully design our learning environments to encourage exploration, imagination, and collaboration. From sensory tables and nature walks to loose-parts play and dramatic centers, every space is intentional.
We respect and integrate diverse cultural, linguistic, and personal experiences. Children are encouraged to express themselves in multiple languages and forms—movement, storytelling, drawing, construction, and more.
Play is not just an activity, it’s how children learn best. Through purposeful, guided play, children at Essential Childcare develop critical thinking, problem-solving, social, emotional, physical, and language skills. Our curriculum offers a balance of child-initiated and educator-supported experiences that reflect the children's interests and developmental needs.
We document and celebrate children’s learning journeys through learning stories, photos, portfolios, and parent-teacher collaboration. These reflections provide valuable insight into each child’s growth and development while promoting communication between educators and families.
